Set yourself deadlines. Writing all the request and for letters of recommendations, and writing the essays takes time. DUH! So give your self deadlines so that you aren't rushing and are being polite to those who you have asked to write your letters of recommendations. I am pretty good at this and help Hubby J keep on track with sweet reminders. (He might not always see them as such. hehe)
Attend lectures or read books about the application process. The Hubby J isn't the one filling in all the forms. I am. He doesn't have the time. So I sacrificed my sweet nap time solitude and filled in form after form. I found that I became lost from all the different applications wording on what they were asking and the differences in the layout of each application. Either Hubby J or I could attend the lectures of advice from the medical school society, so I had to turn to others sources. The guidelines posted on each application website are helpful but still don't help you decipher how you should go forward on individual cases. Find a Buddy who already went through the application process or read a book about the do's and don'ts or call the school more information.
All about the money. Thankfully as you are clicking on which schools you would like to apply to, a nice little calculator tells you the final cost of the first round of the application process. (Helpful in nailing down the budget for the next couple of months). But hopefully you put aside some DOLLARS before hand.
Ask your In Laws. I didn't not know how detailed the application personal information sections where. A call to my mother in law made me sound nosey about their past but I kept repeating that is what it asks honestly. This section is one that would have been a lot faster if I would have prepared before hand.
Don't do it all in one sitting. I had a major headache and a serious desire for chocolate after I finished typing all the courses and their names and their numbers and the grades..... Really I could have eaten a whole chocolate cake! And that was just for one of the three applications! Break it up and rest your eyes.
